Skilful Skyful Part 3A: Evening Star

Clear instructions to make 12″ Evening Star block

Skilful Skyful is a series of tutorials which gradually teach traditional block patchwork stitched on the sewing machine.

The third instalment focusses on Flying Geese units, and as always, free patterns for blocks are included so that you can try out the techniques.

This easier block is called Evening Star.

If you enjoy making this block, and would like to make a baby quilt which uses them, have a look at Baby Stars.

Another slightly more challenging pattern for two related blocks, Dutchman’s Puzzle, and Mosaic is also available once you have mastered Evening Star. These two 12″ blocks are related, as they use the same units arranged in a different way.

Other blocks which uses Flying Geese are Festival Star and Rising Star

The instructions include tips for making and using the Flying Geese units so that you can produce either block, complete with perfect points.

More details, including videos about these techniques can be seen in Skilful Skyful Part 3, in the Techniques section. Some of the samples were made with Makower fabrics kindly provided by the company.
